Wirewound vs Non-Inductive Wirewound Resistors: Which One Do You Need?
The Question Every Design Engineer Asks
When a design calls for a wirewound resistor, a common follow-up is: "Should I use a standard wirewound, or a non-inductive one?"
The answer depends mainly on the frequency of your signal and whether inductance can affect your circuit. This guide clears up the difference so you can choose correctly.
What Is Inductance in a Wirewound Resistor?
A standard wirewound resistor is made by winding resistance wire around a core in a spiral (helical) pattern. That spiral acts like a coil — it introduces inductance into the circuit.
At DC or low frequency, this inductance is negligible. But in high frequency, high speed switching or pulse circuits, that inductance can:
- Distort the signal
- Cause unwanted voltage spikes (induced EMF)
- Reduce accuracy in high frequency sampling
Standard Wirewound vs Non-Inductive: Key Differences
| Standard Wirewound | Non-Inductive Wirewound | |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Single spiral winding | Bifilar (double) winding — cancels inductance |
| Inductance | Moderate | Extremely low |
| Best for | High resistance, high stability, DC/low-freq | High frequency, pulse, fast switching |
| Signal fidelity | Good at low freq | Excellent at high freq |
| Application | Voltage divider, DC load | HF circuits, pulse loops, snubber |
How to Decide
Choose standard wirewound (e.g. KNP Series) when:
- Your circuit operates at DC or low frequency
- You need high resistance with excellent stability
- Pulse impact resistance is the priority
Choose non-inductive wirewound (e.g. NKNP Series) when:
- Your circuit switches fast or operates at high frequency
- Inductance would distort or interfere with the signal
- You want to suppress induced EMF in pulse loops
- You need lower inductance for precise high-frequency sampling
A Quick Example
Imagine a high frequency pulse circuit. With a standard wirewound resistor, the parasitic inductance can create voltage spikes that interfere with your design. Switching to a non-inductive (bifilar wound) resistor eliminates most of that inductance, giving cleaner, more accurate performance — without giving up the power handling of a wirewound resistor.
